“Beat the heat” with these computer tips

August 10, 2010

Day 50 - Workstation
With the dog days of summer upon us it’s good to remember that heat and humidity aren’t good for computers either. Here are some tips that can reduce damage to electronic devices:

Location, Location, Location: You’ve heard this said in real estate markets and it’s true for your computer as well. It’s best to have your computer on the lower level of your home if possible because heat rises. Also, place your computer on an inner wall away from the windows and direct sunlight and do not place it right over or next to heat registers or radiators.

Just Breathe: allow your computer to breathe. Make sure your computer isn’t surrounded by clutter that clogs airflow around it. Place a fan on low in your office to keep air circulating. While working on a laptop, prop it up so that air flows underneath it where it gets the hottest.

OUCH! Hot vehicles!: Try not to leave your laptop or other electronic devices in the car. Temperatures can soar quickly inside a locked car damaging your equipment. If you have to leave your laptop or PDA in the car, store it in a good quality case and place it under the seat away from the sun beating through the windows. Allow your computer time to acclimate to normal temperatures before using it again.

Taking a few extra measures can help your electronic equipment work better and last longer.
