World’s First Oil Cooperative

A small town in rural central Minnesota has the world’s first oil cooperative. Cottonwood Oil Co-op in Cottonwood, MN was formed together in 1921. A group of local leaders started this business to supply petroleum products at a reasonable price. After years of stocking petroleum products they needed to keep up with their customer’s needs as well. Cottownwood Oil Co-op offers services and products such as LP Gas, agronomy, heating and cooling, plumbing, and grain drying & handling equipment.

Cottowood Co-op Oil Co

Cottonwood Oil Co-op has two c-stores located in Cottonwood and Wood Lake. The c-stores take pride in serving awesome food; Smash Hit Subs, Hot Stuff Pizza, and Chester Chicken. They also offer daily soup and sub specials which you can stay up to date with by liking their Facebook page. Cottonwood Oil Co-op does more for their customers than just sell products and services. As a cooperative they go above and beyond to honor those who take pride in helping out in their communities.

Tanks for Thanks program we are part of here in Cottonwood and Wood Lake. We are proud to be a part of the community and we show that pride by providing superior products and dedicated service to our customers at our locations. Tanks for Thanks are a program that goes even further by rewarding free fuel to those people who go the extra mile. If you know someone who goes beyond the extra in the community that we live in and you feel they should be recognized go ahead and nominate them for the Tanks for Thanks!  So who couldn’t use a free tank of gas? Go to the website Cenex.com and nominate someone! Posted by Sandy Kolhei – C- Store Manager

The rural MN ‘picture’ is changing… still healthy, just different.

It’s often easy to fall into a negative mind set as things start to change. Good news! …Our small towns are proving they have the power to remain relevant. The communities that have succeeded in this challenge have done so by competing differently, identifying opportunities and diversifying in order to reach new markets.

What’s a ‘1099’er economy’?! Check out this interview with University of Minnesota Extension Center for Community Vitality’s Extension researchers, Ben Winchester and Bruce Schwartau. They share their observations regarding how Economic Development strategies have changed to accommodate our diverse mix:

As we mentioned back in August of 2012, we’re passionate about community vitality in SW MN! In addition to our association with the Governor’s Broadband Task Force, MVTV Wireless also sponsors several community education events by collaborating with

  • local Chamber and Economic Development groups
  • Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF)
  • Minnesota Renewable Energy Marketplace (MNREM)
  • The Blandin Foundation
  • Minnesota West Community and Technical College
  • University of MN Extension

Don’t miss out! Check out our Events calendar and don’t forget to pre-register.
