MVTV Wireless is a proud sponsor of The Meander and local area artists. This month we focus on a local Meander Artist, Edie Barrett and her GuestHouse. The GuestHouse is a private art gallery which showcases local artists and is a vacation rental.
Walking into this house feels more like walking into a trendy loft in Chicago or San Francisco. It certainly doesn’t look or feel like something you’d expect to find in Ortonville, Minnesota. As a local artist and writer Edie Barrett, renovated this 1905, 1100 ft.² home as an art project. She then turned it into a beautiful vacation rental and private art gallery showcasing local artists. The GuestHouse is her fifth home renovation project. Currently, she is gearing up for The GuestHouse 2015 Art Show. There are 10 artists featured with six of them being annual artists in The Meander, the Upper Minnesota River Art Crawl. Barrett moved to Ortonville in 2010 after living in Santa Barbara, California for 26 years. Once upon a time, her family lived in the Ortonville area in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
When asked about this endeavor, it seems like a natural progression for her, “When you live in Santa Barbara, California you get used to having houseguests. As a college student, I had a great job working in an art gallery. After I graduated from UCSB, I spent over twenty years in high stress business management. When I moved to Ortonville, I was really ready to do something totally different that would be personally satisfying to me. I am a lifelong artist myself so I tend to think a bit out-of-the-box. When I moved here I was stunned by the quality of artistic talent in this region and the creative diversity. I would like to do my part in supporting arts in our region. I have had so much fun with The GuestHouse, organizing the art exhibits, and meeting the guests who come here from all over the nation.”
Local artists at The GuestHouse are: Judith Flicker (of Morris), Corrina Kells, Deb Larson, Kathleen Marihart, the late JoAn Melchild, Rob Rakow, Don Sherman, Liz Rackl, Becky Stattelman, and Edie Barrett. With some advanced notice, studio tours can be arranged.
