Let the County Fairs Begin!

County Fairs are approaching us very quickly. Get ready for mini doughnuts, walking tacos, and great 4-H shows! We had a blast last year participating in a few fairs and are ready to hit them up again this year. MVTV Wireless is proud to announce that we will be a vendor at six local fairs this year. Nobles County, Renville County, Kandiyohi County, Meeker County, Redwood County, and Murray County.

If you are not a typical county fair goer than you are missing out. Over the years the county fair boards have worked hard to come up with many new, fun and exciting activities and entertainment for the whole family.  Last year we saw pig races, kid pedal pulls, live animal shows, talent shows, stock car racing and live music. Here are a few pictures taken from the county fairs last year. You can find more exciting fair pictures on our Facebook page.

Severe Weather Information

As we enter into late Spring and the Summer months we will start to see more severe weather. Now is a good time to start asking ourselves some questions. How are you getting the alerts? Do you have a plan? Difference between a watch and a warning. MVTV Wireless has put together some great advice from Homeland Security and Emergency Management to help you get through this severe weather time of year. Below is just a small amount of information that can be found on the link above.

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) messages may look like a text, or appear over your home screen. The alerts will tell you the type of warning, the affected area, and the duration. You’ll need to turn to other sources, such as television or your NOAA. All-Hazards radio, to get more detailed information about what is happening and what actions you should take.

  • The alert message will include a unique ringtone and vibration.Bad Weather
  • You will never be charged for WEA messages.
  • Emergency alerts will not interrupt any calls or downloads in progress.
  • You need not have GPS or any other special features turned on to receive the alerts.
  • The system does not identify your location or phone number – it sends the message to all devices in a given area.
  • If you’re on the road and enter an area with an active warning, you’ll receive a WEA message as soon as you come within range of one of the affected cell towers.

A weather radio is one of the best ways to stay tuned-in to dangerous weather.

Internet is always a great way to find out what is going on in your area.

You should know how to respond to severe weather or any kind of disaster that could occur in your area – tornadoes, flooding, blizzards, and wind or fire. You should also be ready to be self-sufficient for at least three days.

Minnesota Observes October as Cyber Awareness Month with Online Safety Kids Poster Contest

It’s time for the annual Minnesota ‘Kids Safe Online Poster Contest’!

The Kids Safe Online Poster Contest is a great way to teach children in grades K-12 about cyber security. The deadline to submit posters is Feb. 5, 2014.

  • Kids Safe Online Submission Form

The contest is open to all public, private or home-schooled students in kindergarten through twelfth grade and is administered by the State of Minnesota’s central IT organization, MN.IT Services and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC).

Many homes that have never had internet, now have school issued iPads. Read more about this in our 1:1 iPad initiative blog published September 9th, SW And Central Minnesota Embrace Technology In The Classroom. And to make it even trickier for parents, more and more electronic devices are now internet capable (gaming systems, ipods, Nintendo DS, etc). So now, more then ever, it is important that our children understand the possible dangers and how to keep themselves safe.

According to the getSTEM website:

The primary emphasis of the contest is to raise the awareness of cyber issues for our student population. As students utilize technology and mobile devices more and more, in school and socially, the risks increase. The purpose of the contest is to educate students about safe use of technology, curb cyber bullying, and raise awareness about cyber security. With October as Cyber Security Awareness Month and Bully Prevention Month it may be a great time to talk with your students about these important topics. Entries do not need to come from an entire school or even an entire class. Entries may also come from a school group or club. Entries must be submitted by February 5, 2014.

If you have any questions about the contest please feel free to contact Nancy.Sktua@state.mn.us. You will find the contest rules and submission forms the MN.IT Services Website at http://mn.gov/oet/support/cyber-security-awareness/#.  Please feel free to forward this message on to other educators. I hope we might see an entry from your school and the students you work with.

How did Cyber Security Awareness Month come to be?

Each October, State security experts host a series of events on the State Capitol Campus to promote cyber security. See the October 2011 Proclamation signed by Gov. Mark Dayton in honor of Cyber Security Awareness Month. – MN.IT Services
