Small Business Saturday

It’s just about time to check out our local shops for Small Business Saturday and get going on your holiday list. Are you ready to find some of the best deals right in your own community? Log on to your community Facebook page, check the local newspaper and listen to the radio for Small Business Saturday specials.
Keep Local

This holiday season, 65 percent of consumers plan to complete up to 75 percent of their holiday shopping in-store at a local small business, according to new research from digital marketing solutions firm G/O Digital. Only 1 percent of respondents said they would be not be completing any of their holiday shopping at local small businesses. Business News Daily

Look at how social minded holiday shopping can make a positive impact on our communities. This year let’s give gifts to our friends and loved ones that are socially responsible by considering where the gift comes from. Making a conscious decision to support our small businesses, you can help to preserve local culture while also making a difference in the economy.

Since 2010, consumers with conscience, flair and an eye for great deals have swarmed their local small shops on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in support of Small Business Saturday. More a burgeoning movement than a one-day event, Small Business Saturday will take place nationwide this year on November 29. The concept, originally launched by American Express and recognized by the U.S. Senate, has helped change the landscape of big-city neighborhoods and small town U.S.A. If you’re not participating yet, this is why you should.

REASONS TO SHOP SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY

Why shop at a locally owned business first? The following  reasons show how more money spent at local businesses is reinvested in your community creating diversity and helping the community maintain or create its unique appeal.

  • Shopping local creates jobs.

                     – Shops in our communities create local employment and self-employment.

  • Local shops sell a wide range of products at affordable prices.

                     – People fall out of the habit of shopping locally and are then surprised by the range of products and gifts available.

  • Shopping local retains our communities.

                    – People don’t like losing shops and services in small towns but don’t equate this to how they spend their money.

  • Local shops are for everyone.

                   – Most people can get to their local shops easily and this is especially important for the elderly and young generations and those without transportation.

  • Local shops value you more.

                   – People receive better customer care and service locally. These businesses survive by their reputation and repeat business.

  • Shopping local saves services.

                  – Private and public sector services tend to cluster around shops. As shops disappear so do hairdressers, banks, restaurants, etc.

Stop by your local stores November 25th and shop till you drop on Small Business Saturday.

Madelia Strong

Less than a month ago a fire took place in a small town in rural southwestern Minnesota. Eight businesses were either damaged or destroyed that night in downtown Madelia. Today, the residence and businesses of Madelia continue to work hard to rebuild their community but know it will never be the same. Surrounding communities are stepping up to help out their neighbors in need by hosting fundraisers. Check out twitter for more information on how you can help at #madeliastrong.

Join us at the table to help our neighbor – our family – rise out of the ashes of fire that destroyed their main street, their business district, their livelihoods – and help them remain Madelia#madeliastrong!

Father’s Day

Father’s Day comes once a year and we  thank our fathers for everything they’ve done for us. This year Father’s Day is June 15th – this coming Sunday. For those of you still stuck on something to get Dad, click here for Father’s Day Ideas.

Fathers 2

Father’s Day Gift

By: Lill Pluta

I picked some yellow flowers
that were growing in our yard,
put them in a fancy vase,
and made my dad a card.
My sister laughed and boldly said,
“Your gift is silly,
Dads like ties and frills and tools,
not stuff that’s sweet and frilly.”
But when I gave my dad his gift,
his gace was all aglow.
“Why thank you, son, for pulling weeds
now I’ll have less to mow.”

MVTV Wireless would like to wish all the fathers a Happy Father’s Day!

Minnesota Observes October as Cyber Awareness Month with Online Safety Kids Poster Contest

It’s time for the annual Minnesota ‘Kids Safe Online Poster Contest’!

The Kids Safe Online Poster Contest is a great way to teach children in grades K-12 about cyber security. The deadline to submit posters is Feb. 5, 2014.

  • Kids Safe Online Submission Form

The contest is open to all public, private or home-schooled students in kindergarten through twelfth grade and is administered by the State of Minnesota’s central IT organization, MN.IT Services and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC).

Many homes that have never had internet, now have school issued iPads. Read more about this in our 1:1 iPad initiative blog published September 9th, SW And Central Minnesota Embrace Technology In The Classroom. And to make it even trickier for parents, more and more electronic devices are now internet capable (gaming systems, ipods, Nintendo DS, etc). So now, more then ever, it is important that our children understand the possible dangers and how to keep themselves safe.

According to the getSTEM website:

The primary emphasis of the contest is to raise the awareness of cyber issues for our student population. As students utilize technology and mobile devices more and more, in school and socially, the risks increase. The purpose of the contest is to educate students about safe use of technology, curb cyber bullying, and raise awareness about cyber security. With October as Cyber Security Awareness Month and Bully Prevention Month it may be a great time to talk with your students about these important topics. Entries do not need to come from an entire school or even an entire class. Entries may also come from a school group or club. Entries must be submitted by February 5, 2014.

If you have any questions about the contest please feel free to contact Nancy.Sktua@state.mn.us. You will find the contest rules and submission forms the MN.IT Services Website at http://mn.gov/oet/support/cyber-security-awareness/#.  Please feel free to forward this message on to other educators. I hope we might see an entry from your school and the students you work with.

How did Cyber Security Awareness Month come to be?

Each October, State security experts host a series of events on the State Capitol Campus to promote cyber security. See the October 2011 Proclamation signed by Gov. Mark Dayton in honor of Cyber Security Awareness Month. – MN.IT Services
