Check out all that Pipestone has to offer…
Located in SW Minnesota, intersecting Highways 23, 30, & 75 make this community the crossroads for traffic from Minneapolis and Sioux Falls, SD. Home to 4,00+ residents, it is a hub for agriculture, wind power, manufacturing and a healthy retail sector.
Academics and youth are a primary focus for this community. The Pipestone School District (home of the Arrows!) serves Woodstock, Hatfield, Trosky, Holland, Ihlen and Jasper. There is also a Minnesota West Community and Technical College Pipestone Campus:
Since 1967, the Pipestone Campus of Minnesota West has been educating students in variety of highly specialized technical programs. The construction trades, health, and business programs, as well as specialty programs such as cosmetology create the heart of instruction opportunities offered at the Pipestone Campus. Liberal Arts and Science courses leading to associate degrees are also available through the Pipestone campus. This expanded learning opportunity allows students to earn their associate degree close to home. The Pipestone campus offers a bright and friendly learning environment focused on the individual student. – MnWest, Pipestone Campus website
History serves as a cornerstone for many annual events, museums and points of interest. The Pipestone Concrete Water Tower, designed by L.P. Wolff of St Paul, is one of only two in existence. A near twin is in Brainerd, MN.
The Pipestone National Monument Park pulls historians from across the county. According to the Pipestone Chamber of Commerce Historical Society website:
It was not Horace Greeley’s advice, “Go west, young man, and grow up with the country,” which brought the first white people to the area in extreme southwestern Minnesota where grasses on the upland prairie stood taller than the average man. It was instead a curiosity gleaned from Native American legends and the folklore surrounding a pipestone quarry that attracted the inquisitive pioneers.
These days, crowds gather each August for the “Civil War Days” celebration hosted by the 13th U.S. Infantry Regiment, Company D.
As one of the most enduring and respected events of its type in the upper Midwest, Pipestone Civil War Days is a tribute to our past. Set in a beautiful historic setting visitors are invited to interact with civilian and military reenactors to share some of the flavor of the 1860’s with them. Reenactors, or living historians, from around our nation, recreate scenes of daily life from the home to religion to education to military camps. Events throughout the weekend include educational programs, etiquette and ballroom dance lessons, camp tours, children’s games, Sunday morning church services, a Grand Ball and much more! The roar of the cannon, the smell of gun powder, and the work of our reenactors, performers, and other participants make a full immersion in the 1860s possible. – Pipestone Civil War Days, Pipestone County Museum
Downtown, the Walking Tour is a great way to take in the Pipestone Historical District. They even have Gargoyles!
Our pioneers left us a legacy in stone. From the quarries nearby craftsmen obtained plentiful supplies of native Sioux Quartzite which they used for building. These buildings were constructed primarily from 1880 to 1900. Many of these buildings remain for our admiration today. While enjoying your walk, stop in at any of the several stores and shops along the way. – Chamber of Commerce & Visitor’s Bureau
The Pipestone Performing Arts Center is located at 104 East Main Street, in the heart of Pipestone’s Historic District. This District is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. The Center is housed in a Sioux quartzite building which dates back to 1897.
