US Rep. Peterson to serve on Rural Broadband Task Force

Congratulations to Minnesota’s US Representative Collin Peterson on your appointment to the Rural Broadband Task Force!

https://collinpeterson.house.gov/

Today House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn launched a new House Task Force on Rural Broadband to provide coordination and leadership to end the rural-digital divide. The Task Force will work to advance solutions to ensure all Americans have access to high-speed internet by 2025.

The announcement coincides with the 7th annual Infrastructure Week and comes on the heels of a bipartisan agreement with the President to develop a $2 trillion infrastructure bill. Majority Whip Clyburn and the President agreed on the need to include significant funding for rural broadband in the package.

“High-speed internet is an essential service in America today—yet too many of our fellow citizens in rural communities are being left behind. I have heard numerous stories of families traveling many miles to places where their children can access the internet to do their homework,” said Majority Whip James E. Clyburn. “It’s unacceptable in 2019 that many rural communities have limited to no access to the internet. If rural America is to thrive in the 21st century information economy, it must have affordable and accessible internet service to every community.”

More than $60 billion in public resources have been invested to bring broadband to rural America; however, the FCC reports 25 million rural Americans are still without high-speed internet access. High-speed internet is a modern-day necessity and every American should have the ability to access affordable high-speed internet.

The Task Force will consult with key stakeholders, including rural advocates, market participants, local governments, and Administration officials to develop strategies to eliminate digital deserts and ensure rural Americans can thrive in the 21st century information economy. Top priorities include:

  • highlighting success stories and innovative approaches;
  • ensuring that federal funding for rural broadband is spent effectively;
  • identifying necessary steps to position the United States to lead the world in universal broadband deployment; and
  • passing legislation to advance a transformative agenda on rural broadband that accomplishes the goal of affordable universal access by 2025.

The task force will include the following House members:

Rep. Peter Welch (VT-at large)

Rep. Dave Loebsack (IA-2)

Rep. Mark Pocan (WI-2)

Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-3)

Rep. Sanford Bishop (GA-2)

Rep. G.K. Butterfield (NC-1)

Rep. T.J. Cox (CA-21)

Rep. Antonio Delgado (NY-19)

Rep. Abby Finkenauer (IA-1)

Rep. Jared Golden (ME-2)

Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-17)

Rep. Ron Kind (WI-3)

Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ-2)

Rep. Tom O’Halleran (AZ-1)

Rep. Collin Peterson (MN-7)

Rep. Abigail Spanberger (VA-7)

Rep. Xochitl Torres-Small (NM-2)

Sincerely,

Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 18th, 2019

May is National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM). Let’s all take this opportunity to honor the current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including those who have died in the pursuit of freedom.

The month of May is characterized by six national observances which highlight the contributions of those who have served.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May.  This year it will be celebrated on Saturday, May 18, 2019.  Thanks to President Harry S. Truman, it’s a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces. President Truman led the effort to establish a holiday in order for citizens to unite and to honor our military heroes for their patriotic service in support of the United States of America.

AFD Armed Forces Day in May

Although, originally, there were single day celebrations for each branch of the military, the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force; this format changed on August 21, 1949, when Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. Stemming from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense, the annual celebration now commemorates all branches of the military during one solitary day.

Spring Snow Storm Causes Major Damage

MVTV Wireless Internet’s team has been working diligently to maintain and recover.

As area REA’s wrap up electrical power repairs and road hazards start to clear, the MVTV Wireless employees continue to restore and monitor internet service across SW Minnesota.

The relentless wind and thick ice were a powerful force…

As the storm raged on, Tower Crews and Technicians worked hand in hand with our Network Operations Center (NOC) to repair sites during widespread power outages. MVTV field crews were able to keep several access points operational with gas powered generators. MVTV Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) continued to preform troubleshooting steps to successfully get customers back online. THANK YOU for your dedication to our members!

And, THANK YOU to our members for your patience during this very dangerous weather event!

Sincerely,

Spring Snow Storm Causes Major Power Outages

Minnesota was hit hard over the past 48 hours with a Spring snow storm that brought heavy snow, sleet, hail, rain, lightening and strong winds. Many area roads were either closed or travel not advised which forced businesses to close. Today, the snow is still lightly falling, the roads are slowing improving but several rural homes and communities still remain without power. Line crews have been working day and night to restore power but the storm left many power lines down from the ice, heavy snow and wind. If you are experiencing no internet service but have power, the internet access point may be in an area power has not yet been restored. Tower crew and technicians are working with the power companies to get service restored. Thank you to everyone working hard in this weather to get services back up! The clean up from this storm is far from over but we are all in high hopes this will be the last snow storm of the season.

Thursday’s Minnesota Tornado Drill Cancelled – Due To Storm

***Please see the below information received from the National Weather Service and Association of Minnesota Emergency Managers.

The National Weather Service is cancelling the tornado drill watch/warnings for Minnesota for Thursday, April 11.  The NWS will not be issuing any test tornado watches/warnings for anywhere in Minnesota on Thursday, April 11.  The cancellation is due to the very strong snow storm set to arrive later Wednesday. Blizzard warnings are already in effect for part of the state.  It is also cancelled for Friday, April 12, as some areas of Minnesota will still be experiencing heavy snow and/or strong wind.  We will *not* be issuing any test tornado watches/warnings for Minnesota on Friday.  This decision has been made through many discussions with many of our public safety partners. We wish this decision didn’t have to be made, but feel it is especially wise based on the expectations and timing of the incoming storm.

We will continue to send some information via social media and our web page for the remainder of this week about severe weather safety, but the drill itself is cancelled.  Some have proposed rescheduling the drill in late April or May; we will discuss that with our public safety partners. If local governments, businesses, schools, etc wish to continue with their own drill on Thursday, April 11, that is a local decision.

As mentioned in our Minnesota Sever Weather Awareness Week blog…

Minnesota Sever Weather Awareness Week April 8-12, 2019

With April showers come May flowers. …And thunderstorms! This time of year severe weather could hit at any given time. Sometimes, a few minutes notice is all it takes to save lives!

According to the State of Minnesota’s Homeland Security And Emergency Management’s site (HSEM) ~

The Severe Weather Awareness Week campaign helps teach Minnesotans about weather hazards and provides resources to minimize the risks associated with severe weather. Using this site as a guide, everyone is encouraged to make a plan, build an emergency kit and practice drills.  The campaign and the scheduled statewide tornado drills are conducted in collaboration with the State of Wisconsin.

Future Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Weeks

  •  April 8 – 12, 2019  – Statewide tornado drills on Thursday, April 11
